Summary:

 

Kept by a customs collector
for the port of New York.  The receipts were signed by Richard Furman,
Jonathan Lawrence, John Lasher, and W. S. Smith.  Also included is an
account of vessels arriving at the port of New York, March 22-April 29, 1797.

Scope
and Content Note:

 

This receipt book kept by John Kearny as a
customs collector in New York dates from 1797-1801 and measures 0.01 linear
feet.  The bulk of the receipts in this volume are for the monthly amount
he collected.  He received a commission of three per cent and the rest of
the money was forwarded to his supervisor, first John Lasher and then John
Lawrence.  Also included is an “Account of Arrivals at the Port of New
York commencing with the 22nd day of March 1797.”  This
account includes entries for the date, ship’s name, surname of person seeking
entry, their place of origin, and the amount of money Kearny collected from each
person.
