Manuscript Group 310, Samuel Hayes (1728-1811) Account Book was added to this collection at the time of processing. The source of both the account book and the papers is unknown.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection consists mostly of land surveys conducted by Samuel Hayes, dating from 1696-1817, with bulk dates of 1770-1797. A number was assigned to each document, possibly by Samuel Hayes, and this numerical arrangement has been maintained.

The collection includes surveys for land owned in Bergen, Essex and Sussex Counties by many of Newark’s prominent citizens, including William Halsey (1770-1843) (Box 1, Folder 4), Isaac Crane (1772-1856) (Box 1, Folder 6), Caleb Parkhurst (1744-1817) (Box 1, Folder 1) and Elias Boudinot (1706-1770) (Box 1, Folder 1). Hayes also surveyed a lot for the First Presbyterian Church in Newark (Box 1, Folder 2); lots in Barbadoes Neck for General ( ) Cummins (fl. 1794-1796) (Box 1, Folder 6); highways of Essex County (Box 1, Folder 7); and the Ashfield Tract (Box 1, Folder 2 and Box 2, Folder 2).

The collection also contains surveys conducted by Jonathan Sargent (fl. 1791-1794), and land deeds from the town of Newark (Box 1, Folder 10), including an indenture dated 1696.

Lastly, the papers include two record books kept by Samuel Hayes and his estate. The first is an account book dating from 1754-1793 with entries for the date, product sold, and price. Hayes sold rye, cider, turnips, corn, wheat, and spirits. He also made and hooped barrels. There is also a vendue book, dated July 10, 1811, from Samuel Hayes’ estate in which the buyer, product purchased, and price are listed. At the back of the vendue book there are accounts for the purchase of lots of wood.
