Born in Irvington, N.J., Cyrus Durand Chapman (1856-1918)
received instruction in art from his father, later attended the
Stevens Institute in Hoboken and subsequently travelled to Europe
to train with leading artists.  The collection is comprised
mainly of correspondence between family members. There are
letters from Jane Chapman and the Reverend John L. Chapman to
their son while he was abroad during the 1880s as well as letters
from Cyrus D. Chapman to each of his parents and to his fiancee
Carrie (Miss Caroline A.F.) Holbrook.  Also included is a
book of stock designs and other materials pertaining to Chapman’s
grandfather Cyrus Durand, an inventor and bank-note engraver as
well as letters from John Holbrook Chapman to his father, Cyrus
Durand Chapman.  An inventory is available.
