Summary

Summary:

This “book containing copies of surveys of roads taken in order to make a map of part of the County of Bergen taken A. D. 1823 & 24” actually transcends these dates and includes a variety of additional information. The first part of the journal records the location and ownership of grist and saw mills, factories, stores, taverns and private residences for parts of Bergen County. Entries from 1825-1833 pertain to private surveying jobs. Of particular interest, are Berdan’s detailed descriptions of mills in Paterson, his enumeration of the costs for building a two-story house, recipes, medicinal cures and a “listing of books in his possession.” In addition, the journal contains John Vanderbeck’s will and other items pertaining to Harman P. Vanderbeck.

Purchase, 1982.
