John Insley Blair, who started his successful business career in Blairstown, New Jersey, was a financier and railroad developer. When he was 81, he sat to have his portrait done by Olin Levi Warner, one of the best-known American sculptors of the late 19th century. This is a plaster cast of the original.

A native of Bordentown, New Jersey, artist Charles Lawrence traveled at least twice to Point Breeze, Joseph Bonaparte's estate. Bonaparte fled to America when his brother, Napoleon, fell from power in Europe in 1815. Point Breeze was considered an artistic center, drawing artists from far and wide to see Bonaparte's collection of Old Masters.

An image from the Mary Phillbrook Collection

Mary Phillbrook was the first woman attorney in New Jersey and she used her legal training for the advancement of women's right. This image is just one of many from the Mary Phillbrook collection. The collection spans 1843 to 1945 and consists of manuscripts, correspondence, scrapbooks, legal, historical, and genealogical material.

This Renaissance-revival cabinet on turned legs houses an Edison radio. The radio features a system which lights a signal to indicate that pre-selected stations are sharply tuned in.

Anna Lindner painted hundreds of watercolors, all filled with love and affection for her immediate surroundings. Stricken with polio as a child, Anna was cripple and confined to a wheelchair. As a result, Anna's paintings depicted only events that occurred in her home or what she could see from her window or porch. Anna often recorded the families Christmases.

A member of the folklore and cultural group, Essencia Dominicana, donned this colorful festival costume, consisting of a jumpsuit and cape, for the 1994 Dominican Day Parade in Paterson, New Jersey. Ana Goicochea, who made the costume, modeled it after similar ones used in the Dominican Republic.

The New Jersey Historical Society's library is home to thousands of photographs that highlight New Jersey's history. This image of the Jone's [sic] House is just one of many images in our collection. On July 14, 1895 a tornado ripped through the Cherry Hill section of Hackensack raising the Jone's [sic] house ten feet off the ground with the family still inside. Seconds later the house was dropped back onto its cellar. However, it was not properly aligned and thus the house toppled over.

This early coin-operated jukebox was a Thomas Edison invention. Powered by a triple spring Edison motor, it used Edison's wax cyclindrical records to bring music to amusement arcades and other public places at five cents per play.

Mathew Egerton, Jr., who made this unusually large and elegant tall case clock, was a member of a family of furniture makers who for three generations worked in New Brunswick. The internal works were made by Leslie & Williams of New Brunswick.

A native of New Jersey and a graduate of Princeton University, Aaron Burr was a soldier, lawyer, United States Senator, and Vice President. History remembers Burr for his 1804 duel with Alexander Hamilton in Weehawken, New Jersey.

This unique, Renaissance pattern pair of light candelabra was made for display at the 1900 Paris World's Fair by the Newark plant of Tiffany & Co. After the fair, they were owned by New Jersey Governor Franklin Murphy.

One of the main winter sports in 19th century New Jersey was ice skating. The sport was enhanced in mid-century by the introduction of an all-steel skate which replaced the somewhat cumbersome wood-based style.

To make a shape like this pan - used for cooling fresh cow's milk - a glassblower would have blown the glass freely and not used a mold.

Eggs have been a big business for many New Jersey farm families over the years. This clever invention answered the need for a lightweight but sturdy shipping container in the days before the availability of mass produced, less expensive wood pulp paper cartons.

In 1963, New Jersey's Grace S. Apgar fashioned this whimsical pitcher into the shape of Revolutionary War heroine Molly Pitcher Hays for the wife of the governor of New Jersey. Born Mary Ludwig near Trenton, Molly Pitcher got her name after carrying pitchers of water to her husband and other thirsty soldiers during the Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey, in June 1778 and became a popular figure in New Jersey and American history.

This yellow tulle, strapless dress was worn by the donor to her high school's prom in 1956. It is decorated on the front and back with garlands of cotton fabric and paper flowers.

Artist Alvan Anglin made the calabash gourd handbag from Jamaican products. It is decorated with a beautiful Jamaican scene of the sun and trees. Anglin began his traditional crafts on his native island, and then moved to New Jersey in the 1990s.

Photomural from the Wayne B. Yarnall Maritime Collection

Wayne B. Yarnall, a civil engineer and ship modeler, took it upon himself to fill in the gaps of New Jersey's maritime history. He immersed himself in the role of maritime historian and explored the waterfront towns of New Jersey. The photomural of Shipbuilders at Dennisville is just one of many photos from the collection.

This is one of a set of four Windsor-type side chairs believed to have been made by Trenton craftsman John Chambers, who incorporated a conservative ribbon-ladderback Chippendale element.

This is part of a two-piece bathing costume typically worn by women at the New Jersey shore beaches in the early 20th century. The costume consisted of bloomer-style legs, squared neckline, and puffed short sleeves. An outer skirt was then worn over the legs.
