chronologically.
The Ephemera Collection is an open collection of collected printed matter relating mostly to New Jersey. Included are menus, business cards, invitations, greeting cards, programs, fugitive items, and scrapbooks. The Menus, (1840-present. 2 ft).consist of food selections of New Jersey restaurants, clubs, banquets and other business’ serving food. The Business cards, (ca, 1870s-1990s 2.25 ft). and trade cards include product information or advertisements for food, soap, patent medicine, and clothing from New Jersey, the U.S. and Europe. Also includes cards for Speakeasys during Prohibition and the Clark Thread Co. of Newark. The Invitations (1800-1990’s, 1.5 ft) consist of invitations to New Jersey weddings, social functions, political events and other events. The Programs, (1825-1990’s, 3.5 ft) are for theater shows, musical events, parades, monument unveilings, and other events. The Programs are for programs in Newark (1870s-1990s) and elsewhere. The Greeting cards. (19th-20th century. 2.5 ft). are for Christmas, Easter, New Years, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Valentines Day. and Birthdays. Also cards concerning sympathy, railroads and Westminster Lesson cards. The miscellaneous or Fugitive ephemera (19th & 20th century. 4 25 ft) include admission tickets, announcements, bill heads, instruction booklets, toy or gift books, book plates, calling cards, calendars, certificates, dance cards, tallies for dances, Newark Ward election tickets, membership cards & lists, nature scenes, Newark street guides/advertisements, observances, poems, election campaign flyers, .school functions (Phillipsburg, 1890-1915 and elsewhere), stamps, stock certificates, tax forms, election and railroad tickets, railroad timetables and transfers, tokens of merit, World War I materials, and World War II ration books. The Scrapbooks (21 volumes, late 19th century, 4 ft), consist mostly of collected ephemera especially trade cards and greeting cards, engravings clipped from magazines, and a variety of colorful 19th century printed items.

EPHEMERA Scrapbooks, 19th century. 21 volumes.
The Ephemera Scrapbooks consist mostly of albums constructed by late 19th century New Jerseyeans. These items deals more with business cards, prints (colored and black and white) and other materials. The ephemeral scrapbooks deal less with newsclippings.
Prior to 1995 these scrapbooks were collected by the Museum department because the printed cards and “stickers” in the albums made them appear more object-oriented rather than informational. The Scrapbook collection (MG 1494) was collected by the library mostly from scrapbooks filled with newsclippings, photographs, and other materials..
