Finding aid encoded by Julia Telonidis. December 2004.Production of the EAD 2002 version of this finding aid was made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Finding aid written in English.
The authorship of this diary is unknown. The volume, however, does contain a sheet from the prescription pad of A. Leslie Gibbins, M.D. with an address for an office in Newark, New Jersey. The entries in the diary document a doctor’s practice, which include both office appointments and home visits, as well as personal expenses and social activities. The brief personal entries in the diary provide some evidence that the physician was a woman. In particular, entries that list the purchase of items such as dresses, hats, slips, and a housecoat seem to indicate that the diary documents the practice of a woman doctor in Newark during the 1930s.
This collection consists of a physician’s diary spanning the months January-May 1937 and containing patient information, appointments, payments, and brief descriptions of illnesses and treatments. It also includes personal information, such as home and office expenses, lists of purchases and social activities, and a medical note written on a sheet from the prescription pad of A. Leslie Gibbins, M.D.
This collection should be cited as: Manuscript Group 1584, New Jersey Physician’s Diary, The New Jersey Historical Society.
Purchased by the New Jersey Historical Society in June 2002.
