Jacob Fine (fl. 1831-1857) was a shoemaker in Raritan, Somerset County, New Jersey.

Scope and Content Note

The records consist of three daybooks and an account book used by Jacob Fine to track his shoemaking business. The daybooks date from 1831-1834, 1835-1839, and 1843-1857 and record the daily business of making, mending, and soling shoes and boots. The entries are by date and note customer name, job, and price. Fine’s account book dates from 1833-1852 and tracks individual customer’s accounts. These entries are by person and record date and money owed. The accounts are not indexed. There are also miscellaneous receipts, promissory notes, and accounts inserted between the pages of the four volumes.

Acquisition Information

The record books were the gift of William S. Hunt in 1938. They were a part of a larger donation containing photographs, books, pamphlets, and a 1756-1759 record book kept by Andrew Leake, also of Somerset County (MG 118). The volumes were labeled with the accession numbers M2730-M2733 at the time of their donation.
