Summary:

Primarily the papers of Ruth Trappan (1904-1997), a West Orange school teacher and puppeteer, as well as some materials from her parents J.(ohn) Judson Trappan (1867-1958) and Aida Minnie (Johnston) Trappan (1871-1943), and her sisters, Grace Trappan (1905-1998), Jean Trappan (1907-1988), and Elizabeth Summerfield Trappan (1909-1996).

Ruth was an art teacher who studied at the New York School of Applied Design for Women, The Pratt Institute, and New York University.  From 1929 to 1964 she was employed by the West Orange School District, first as an art teacher and then as Director of Art.  She bought a house in Yarmouth, Maine in 1960, summering there until her retirement, when she took up full-time residence.

Materials in the collection document Ruth’s professional and personal life, along with her puppeteering, and include correspondence, photographs, financial records, notebooks, and information on Trappan family genealogy.  The New Jersey Historical Society also holds additional Trappan Family items in its museum collection.
