Summary: 

Materials Used by and related to the midwife practice of Newark resident Mary Paraboschi Giacomini.  Includes records of reports of births from 1926-1962, printed materials on childbearing and child rearing, photographs, and midwife andmaterials on childbearing and child rearing photographs, and midwife andon childbearing and child rearing, photographs, and midwife and nurse’s licenses.  There are also nurse’s licenses.  There are also nurse’s licenses.  There are also related items in the museum collections of The New Jersey Historical Society

Biographical Note:

Mary Paraboschi was born on June 18, 1903 in Newark, New Jersey.  She was the daughter of Carmello Paraboschi and Chiara Niozzoni, Italian immigrants, and married ( ) Giacomini.  She worked as a midwife in Newark from 1926 to 1975.

This collection was the gift of the Giacomini and Paraboschi Families, 1997.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection contains records of reports of birth from 1926 to 1962, blank report forms, three books about childbirth and childcare and personal papers and photographs belonging to Mary Paraboschi Giacomini.  The papers date from 1926 to 1975 and are organized into three series: Series I: Records of Reports of Birth; Series II: Literary Productions; and Series III: Personal Papers.  Each series is arranged in chronological order.

Information found in reports of birth includes the place of birth, name, sex and color of the child; name, age, address and birthplace of the parents; the number of siblings, the attendant to the birth, and the date the report was written.

Among the personal papers are a copy of Mary Paraboschi Giacomini’s birth certificate, midwife licenses, and photographs of herself with babies she delivered.  This folder also contains printed documents on midwife delivery and bag contents, and blank patient record forms.
