Abstract: Consists mostly of three daybooks kept by a Nottingham, N.J., coffinmaker and cabinet maker which mention the jobs he performed, his clients, and prices paid for his work.

Biographical Note

Abraham R. Hutchinson was a Nottingham, (was in Burlington County, but became a part of Mercer County in 1838) N.J. coffinmaker and cabinetmaker who performed various jobs for many individuals, including coffin and gravestone construction, furniture construction and repair, and also odd jobs such as raking wheat and picking peaches. He also sold farm related items like manure, hay, and corn.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of three daybooks that list Abraham Hutchinson’s daily business transactions, mostly coffin and furniture construction tasks. Listed next to each client name and task perfomed was the price charged and whether or not it was paid.

There are also a series of returned bank checks signed by A.R. Hutchinson, two receipts for the purchase of funeral plots and a newspaper clipping from the “Monmouth Democrat” newspaper dated December 27, 1894 which details the changing funerary customs of the time.
