Historical Note

The Act of Assembly of 1694 first established the boundaries of Burlington County, New Jersey, which were further delineated by the act of January 21, 1709/1710. The county was reduced by the creation of Hunterdon County and Mercer County on March 11, 1713/14 and February 22, 1838 respectively. By 1883, Burlington County was bounded on the north by Crosswicks Creek; on the northeast by Keith’s province line; on the southeast by the Atlantic Ocean; on the southwest by Little Egg Harbor; and on the northwest by the Delaware River.

Scope and Content Note

The Burlington County Birth Register dates from 1770-1785 and measures 0.02 linear feet. The register has entries for the date the birth was registered, parent (s) (usually only the father’s name is given), sex of the baby, day of birth (i.e. 4th day of week) and three columns of numerical data (possibly representing the baby’s weight and length). Of note is the recording of African-American births.
