Historical Note

William Fordyce Mavor was born at New Deer, Aberdeenshire, U.K. in 1758. He became the Vicar of Hurley in Berkshire in 1789, and later became headmaster of the Woodstock School. Besides history, Mavor also wrote poetry, and published works on education, farming, and stenography. His work, Universal History, Ancient and Modern, from the earliest records of time to the general peace of 1802 consisted of 25 volumes and was described by the publisher Isaac Collins as “a perspicuous view of Universal History whose professed aim is to preclude the apology for ignorance in one of the most interesting and useful objects of human research.” Collins offered the set through printer David Allinson of Burlington, New Jersey.

Publisher Collins was originally a Quaker from Burlington, but his active support of the revolutionary movement caused him to lose his place in the Quaker congregation and forced him to take his printing business to Trenton and New York. He distributed the Mavor set through David Allinson, who, in 1803, offered the volumes to prominent men of New Jersey, via subscription. Notable subscribers included Elisha Boudinot, Joseph Clark, William Halsey, Alexander MacWhorter, Samuel Pennington, John Rutherfurd, and Richard Stockton. The College of New Jersey and the American Whig Society were also on the subscription list.
