Biographical Note

Lewis Pintard Bayard was born in Pennsylvania on July 23, 1791. He was first ordained a deacon on August 2, 1812, and later ordained a priest in Trinity Church in July 1815. His was the first ordination ceremony to be held at Trinity Church since its inception. Bayard served as rector of Trinity Church from 1813 to 1820.

He subsequently served as rector of Episcopal churches in New Rochelle and Geneseo, New York and as principal of the high school at Geneseo. He died September 21, 1840 at the Island of Malta.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of the sermons of Lewis Pintard Bayard spanning the years 1812-1816. These sermons document the ministry of Bayard during the time he served as rector of Trinity Church in Newark, New Jersey, and were preached at Newark, New Brunswick, Princeton, Trenton, and in New Rochelle, New York.

This collection is arranged in chronological order by the date of the first preaching. All of the sermons were preached more than once, as was the practice, some as late as 1832.
