Biographical Note:

Salem County, New Jersey resident Josiah Miller kept this collection. Josiah and his son of the same name were prosperous
Quaker farmers and merchants of the Salem & Mannington Company. Josiah Sr. also became the guardian of his minor nephew John E. Nicholson who came of age in 1821.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains various types of documents from Josiah Miller’s business dealings. It contains account books, receipts,
labor and rent records, guardianship accounts, letters, pocket almanacs, financial memoranda and deeds, dating from 1761-1821. This collection also contains a few pieces of correspondence. The documents reflect the workings of a busy merchant and landowner, and mention transfers of land, inventory lists of goods bought and sold, and listings of paid debts.
