Doing History Student Conference

The New Jersey History Day Advisory Board in association with Bergen County Technical Schools, William Paterson University, The New Jersey Historical Society, New Jersey Network (NJN), The Newark Museum, and the New Jersey Performance Arts Center (NJPAC) will present \'Doing History\' Student Conference on March 27, 2007 in downtown Newark. The conference will serve National History Day students as a laboratory for practicing historical thinking skills and as a forum for questions about New Jersey History Day in May 2007.

The event will enable students to practice \'doing history\' through workshops on primary sources, oral histories, and how to use historical archives. Additionally, students will gain expert knowledge on writing papers; creating exhibits; filming documentaries; and conducting historical performances.

The keynote speech will be delivered by Dr. Clement Price, Professor of History, Rutgers University. Dr. Price will address the topic of the Newark Riot of 1967, in the context of this year\'s National History day theme, \'Triumph and Tragedy.\' Dr. Price will examine the roles of the media, the government and the community during the Newark Riot and then use those concepts to model the historical method for students.

National History Day is a highly regarded non-profit education program that culminates in an annual competition for students in grades 6-12. Since 1974, National History Day has engaged students and teachers in the excitement of historical inquiry and creative presentation. The program has received the Charles Frankel Prize from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and is highlighted in the presidential Committee on Arts and Humanities report, \'Creative America.\' National History Day has affected more than 9 million students who have gone on to careers in business, law, medicine and countless other disciplines in addition to history related professions.

New Jersey History Day is sponsored by William Paterson University with support from the New Jersey Historical Commission.
