NJHS and Glass Roots, Inc. Offer Adult Craft Workshop

2002-09-27

It might look like a plain ‘ol bauble, but with a little love, imagination and some serious heat, glass beads can turn an aquarium into a brilliant prism, a simple flower arrangement into a dazzling display of color and light or a simple strand into a work of art.

The New Jersey Historical Society is teaming with GlassRoots, Inc., a multi-dimensional arts program, to offer beginner and intermediate-level students the opportunity to create their own works of art during “Fine Sand to Molten Glass,” an adult craft class to run for four Saturdays on November 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The cost is $140 for registration and materials. Registration and prepayment are required by Thursday, October 10, 2002.

The workshop draws upon New Jersey’s long and distinguished tradition in the glass industry and features examples of works from some of New Jersey’s finest historic glassmakers such as Wheaton Glass Co., Salem Glassworks, Whital Tatum and Co., and more.

A glass expert from the Museum of American Glass in Millville, NJ will open the workshop during the first session to be held at NJHS headquarters at 52 Park Place. There, participants will explore the Historical Society’s exhibitions and historic glass collections. The remaining three sessions of the workshop will be held at GlassRoots, Inc. Studios at 10 Bleeker Street, where participants will create their own glass beads while focusing on shaping, using heat, applying decorations, and working with the natural properties of glass.
