Teacher Summer Institute offered

The New Jersey Historical Society, The Newark Museum, and William Paterson University are sponsoring Exploring Identity: Using Cultural Institutions as Learning Laboratories, a two-week-long summer teacher institute to be held Monday through Thursday between July 7–17, 2003.

The institute, which will satisfy some of New Jersey’s Core Curriculum Content Standards, is designed to accommodate diverse learning styles and will combine non-traditional teaching techniques with practical classroom applications using collections from both The New Jersey Historical Society at 52 Park Place, Newark and The Newark Museum at 49 Washington Street, Newark. Participants will learn how to use primary sources, artifacts, and community resources to explore the theme of “identity” in many different interpretations. Class sessions will alternate between the galleries and classrooms at The New Jersey Historical Society and The Newark Museum and will be taught by an experienced staff of museum educators, teachers, content specialists, and consultants.

Daily topics will include: Exploring Identity through Self, Identity through Communities, and Identity through History, Culture, and the Arts. Participants also will receive a notebook of lesson plans and ideas that can be adapted for practical application in their individual classrooms.

The Summer Institute’s enrollment is limited to the first 20 applicants for a fee of $499. Please register by June 20, 2003. Optional 3 graduate credits are available through William Paterson University for an additional fee. For more information and to register, contact Office of Graduate Studies, William Paterson University, 300 Pompton Road, Wayne, NJ 07470 (973) 720-2237 or visit www.wpunj.edu.
