NJHS receives AAM Award for Turnpike Treasures

2002-05-23

Turnpike treasures? It may sound like an oxymoron, but Turnpike Treasures: The Souvenirs and Stuff that Celebrate an American Phenomenon is an evocative tribute to one of the 20th century’s most significant roadways and the photographs and objects created to commemorate it. A true New Jersey “treasure” in its own right, the book recently was awarded an honorable mention in the 2002 American Association of Museums (AAM) Museum Publications Design Competition for exhibition catalogs.

“This is fabulous news — AAM’s publications awards are much coveted and enormously hard to come by,” said Sally Yerkovich, President and CEO of The New Jersey Historical Society. “We were the only historical organization to receive this recognition. We are very proud of this accomplishment.”

Turnpike Treasures: The Souvenirs and Stuff that Celebrate an American Phenomenon was published to accompany the exhibition What Exit? New Jersey and Its Turnpike, which opened September 2001 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the New Jersey Turnpike. The exhibition, which ends its stay at the Historical Society in August 2002, will travel next to Rutgers University in Camden, NJ, and then to the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton.

Through the incisive essay by exhibition curator Ellen Snyder-Grenier and a variety of brilliant color photographs — ranging from a 1950s advertisement for “Howard Johnson’s” to a plastic E-ZPass keychain — this book explores how the New Jersey Turnpike, a truly American phenomenon, has been the inspiration for photographs as well as souvenirs and other objects that celebrate its creation.

Turnpike Treasures: The Souvenirs and Stuff that Celebrate an American Phenomenon can be purchased for $10 in the Historical Society’s History Shop.
