A “Postively Negatives” Halloween Celebration

Newark, NJ -- The New Jersey Historical Society is eliminating the color orange and celebrating Halloween in Black and White! Come in costume, grab a goody bag, and join us on Saturday, October 30, 2004 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. for Postively Negatives! A Halloween Community Family Festival in Black and White at 52 Park Place, Newark, NJ 07102. The festival is open and free to the public.

In honor of Newark photographer William Cone, the festival highlights the Historical Society’s exhibition City on Display: A Newark Photographer and His Clients, 1890s-1940s, which explores what we can and cannot understand about the past through photographs. The familiar, the long gone, and the potential carriers of stories, these historic black-and-white photographs offer an exciting and engaging opportunity to visit places and people of our recent past. In this interactive exhibition visitors will manipulate a photo's frame to learn more about the choices a photographer makes; view silent films; arrange a store window display for “photographing”; and make “decisions” about the layout of a city and the design of a living space.

The festival will also feature a special performance by storyteller Gerald Fierst at 2:00 p.m. A Montclair resident, Mr. Fierst will tell scary NJ ghost stories.

In addition, families can participate in a number of art activities, including decorating a black-and-white trick-or-treat bag, adding a scene to the white-on-black Halloween mural, and decorating mini-pumpkins. Goody bags will be handed out to families as well.
