The New Jersey Historical Society Hosts a Special Tour for The New Jersey Chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames

On November 9, 2006, The New Jersey Historical Society will host The North Jersey Chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames in America for a special behind-the-scenes tour.

Members of the group will begin their tour with a visit to the Historical Society’s vast library collection. The library houses some of the oldest documents in New Jersey, including the original charter from Charles II deeding land that would become New Jersey, colonial era manuscripts, and a wide variety of materials that reveal the social culture and customs of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Visitors will also have an opportunity to view the Historical Society’s extensive costume collection. The collection includes items from the everyday, such as school smocks and dresses from the 19th century to the extraordinary, such as Mrs. Thomas Edison’s salmon silk skirt and bodice worn at the 1889 Paris Exposition.

What tour would be complete without a look at items from the Historical Society’s extensive museum collections? Aaron Burr’s portrait and cradle, portraits of Martin Ryerson and Clement Eugene Chevalier, and General George McClellan’s field service set are just a few of the many items in our collections that will be on display during this special tour. In addition to visiting our on-site collections holdings facility, guests will enjoy the rare opportunity to visit our off-site collections storage facility in Harrison.

The Historical Society’s behind-the-scenes tours provide a unique opportunity for history-lovers to see the inner workings of one of New Jersey’s oldest institutions. For more information on scheduling a tour, please contact Beth Mauro at 973-596-8500, ext. 242.
