Euphemia Maria Brinckerhoff, the daughter of Euphemia Ashfield and George O. (also identified as D. or C.) Brinckerhoff, was born in September of 1796 in Mount Hope, New Jersey. She was raised on the family homestead called Hybla Hill in Parsippany, New Jersey. She attended Miss Scribners School in Morristown during her childhood and married Dr. Stephen Fairchild on May 18, 1818, with whom she had two children: Richard Van Wyck Fairchild and Eliza S. Fairchild. Euphemia (Brinckerhoff) Fairchild died on June 20, 1882 in Parsippany.
There is no record of the donor of this volume, but it is likely that it was donated with other Brinckerhoff family items in a 1922 bequest by Ruth E. Fairchild, the wife of Dr. Richard Van Wyck Fairchild.
These papers consist of a cipher book kept by Euphemia Maria Brinckerhoff in 1810. The volume contains arithmetic lessons, starting with simple addition and ending with business calculations that involve interest, percentages, and commissions.
