Many of the receipts concern payments made to businesses, organizations, and persons in New York City.
In 1804, James J. Margarum was the secretary of New York City’s “Washington Lodge,” probably a Masonic organization. Margarum rented houses in New York City at 14 Upper Reade Street in 1806, and later at 58 Reade Street, and it is possible that these were the locations of “Washington Lodge.”
James J. Margarum was also the cashier at the State Bank in New Brunswick, New Jersey at the time of its opening in 1812. He died in New Brunswick the following year.
