“Honoring Cudjo Banquante; Revolutionary War Soldier and Newark’s First Black Business Owner”
This exhibit honors the life and legacy of Cudjo Banquante, an enslaved Akyem Abuakwa royal of the Gold Coast (now Republic of Ghana), who fought as a substitute soldier on the patriot side of the American Revolution. For his military service, Cudjo was granted his freedom and an acre of land in Newark, New Jersey, where he built a successful ornamental plant business.
