Journal of physician Samuel Kennedy, Jr. (ca. 1745-1804) of
Johnsonsburg, N.J. One of the earliest physicians on record in
Sussex County (in an area that would later become Warren County).
An early member of the Medical Society of New Jersey in 1769, he
was also a judge in the Sussex County courts, and a member of the
Assembly in 1780.  He practiced medicine from ca. 1768 until
his death in 1804.

 

Journal contains
medicinal recipes, descriptions of illnesses and cures, some
patient case histories, and procedures for inoculation.  Ailments
include cancer, gonorrhea, hives, snake bites, piles, dropsy and
urinary infections.  Recipes include diuretics, elixirs and
cures such as treacle, castor oil and digitalis. Some births and
deaths are also recorded.  Includes household advice, such
as how to preserve meat and how to preserve the roof of a home.

 

Also in the volume
are fourteen letters written by Samuel Kennedy to his second wife
Anna Shaver (1770-1833):  nine love letters written during
the couple’s courtship (1790) and five letters written after
their marriage (1791). Also, two musical compositions for Anna,
one poem, and one letter written to an unidentified
“Reverend” about politics.

 

Scattered
throughout the volume are genealogical notes on the Kennedy
family made by Dr. Samuel Kennedy and other family members, from
1769 to the early twentieth century.

Journal maintained by Samuel Kennedy, Jr., a doctor of Warren
County, New Jersey.  Contains medical case histories, cures,
medical formulas and descriptions of illnesses.  Of interest
are fourteen letters of courtship written by Kennedy to Anna
Shaver (1770-1833) who became his second wife in 1791 and two
musical pieces penned for “Miss Anne [sic] Shaver.”
Also included are genealogical notes on the Kennedy family which
cover members born from 1769 to those that died in the early
1900s.
