Mostly receipts of William Gibbons concerning the purchase of muslin, brick, lime, blacksmith services, books, carriage repairs, baskets, and other materials, mostly in Morristown, New Jersey and New York City. William Gibson was a transportation mogul who ran a line of steamboats and stagecoaches from New York City to Philadelphia in the 1820s. He lived in Madison, New Jersey.
This collection was purchased in 1997. The October 1, 1841 tax receipt was purchased on May 24, 1971 as a part of a larger group of miscellaneous New Jersey ephemera which was assigned the collection number MG 783. In 1974, this collection was broken down and the individual pieces placed within other manuscript collections. At that time, the William Gibbons item was placed within MG 25; it was moved to MG 1397, William Gibbbons Papers in July of 2001.
