Summary:

Daybook kept by two Newark physicians documenting pharmaceuticals sold and home visits.

Biographical Note:

Dr. Samuel Hayes (1776-1839) was appointed “apothecary of New York Hospital” in 1799 and began selling drug remedies and therapeutics in 1803.  His medical practice began the next year (1804) in partnership with Dr. Cyrus Pierson (1758-1806) in Newark, where they both experimented with vaccinations and sold pharmaceuticals.

Scope and Content Note:

Daybook kept by two Newark physicians whose practice extended to New York.  Documents pharmaceuticals and sundries sold to institutions and doctors (1803) and also physician services provided by Dr. Samuel Hayes during home visits (1804-1806).

The first part of the daybook consists of daily entries with account notations of pharmaceuticals sold to institutions including  New York Hospital, “State Prison,” Philips and Clark, and the City Dispensary.  Accounts include Dr. David Hosack, Dr. William E. Beach, Dr. R. B. Rogers, Dr. Pierson, and Dr. Manley.  The list of supplies  include “sundries,” olive oil, herbals, chamomile, “saturn,” “dressings for blisters,” and syringes.

The second part of the daybook, starting in February 1804 (possibly in a different hand) consists of daily entries of home visits made by Dr. Hayes during the early years of his medical practice in Newark.
