Jonathan Valentine was born on November
18, 1766, and was the proprietor of a general store in Turkey (now New
Providence), New Jersey. He and his wife Abigail had at least two
daughters: Betsey (ca. 1792-1792) and Sarah (ca. 1796-1797). The family
attended the New Providence Presbyterian Church. After his death on April
8, 1801, Valentine’s estate was estimated at ₤273.4.8.

1791-1796. Accounts are labeled with the name of the customer and each
entry includes date, items bartered or sold, and price. Typical items sold
include tea, lace, spirits, and tobacco. The book is labeled “IV,
1791, Book A” and does not contain an index.
