Written by Gilder as a midshipman at the United States Naval
Academy to his family in Newark. Born in New York, Joseph
Gilder and his family later moved to Bordentown. He entered the
Naval Academy in 1872, but after two years resigned and went to
Newark to become a reporter. After working for newspapers in
Newark and New York, he and his sister, Jeanette L. Gilder,
founded the <1New York Critic>1 He served as co-editor of this critical
journal from 1881 to 1902. Subsequently he became editor of
<1 Putnam’s Monthly Magazine,>1 editor of the <1New York Times Book>1
<1 Review,>1 and literary advisor for the <1Century Magazine,>1 which was
edited by his brother, Richard Watson Gilder. In 1911 Joseph left
journalism for banking.
