Summary:

Papers and business records of the Smith and allied families, collected by Philip Henry Waddell Smith and donated by his daughter.  Included in this collection are the following sub-groups:

  1. Hiram Smith (1756-1832) – letters, estate papers, financial records, and dockets kept by this Morris County sheriff and tax collector
  2. Benjamin Smith – financial records and dockets kept, ca 1790-1831, as justice of the peace in Troy Hills.
  3. George W. Smith (1832-1906) – correspondence and business records of this Illinois commercial farmer and stockbreeder; records of the South Shore Wine Company of New York City and North East, Pennsylvania; cotton accounts and “Savannah Cotton Claims” against the United States government, 1863-72, made with his brother, J. Condit Smith.
  4. Philip Henry Waddell Smith (1869-1946) – correspondence, diaries; scrapbooks, genealogical notes; business records, ca 1915-35, kept as vice president of the Standard Underground Cable Company of Sewickley, Pennsylvania (near Pittsburgh), and later of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, which was a division of the General Cable Corporation of New York City; P. H. W. Smith’s collection of account books and other financial records kept by members of allied families in New York City and the townships of Hanover and Troy Hills, New Jersey, including records of George Bowlby, 1764-1775, Ebenezer Farrand, Jr., 1789-1799, Samuel Frost, 1786-1796, James Howell, 1824-1837, Dr. Joseph Parrit, 1817-1831, and David Vanhorne, 1758-1765; Smith’s autograph collection, 1667-1950, including a series of documents of the New York City Mayor’s Court, manuscripts concerning early New York merchants and shipping, and correspondence of:

  9. Donald C. MacLaren – papers of a Presbyterian minister and educator who corresponded with Woodrow Wilson between 1902 and 1922.
  10. John Waddell (1714-1762) – papers of a New York merchant shipper and Loyalist.
  11. William Coventry H. Waddell (1802-1881) – papers, 1830-1881, of this New York property owner and officeholder concerning the Board of General Proprietors of the Eastern Division of New Jersey and the New Jersey Harbor Company.
