The volume contains five poll lists of eligible voters for state and local elections, along with a record of the votes cast by Bedminster Township residents. The register was kept by David Nevius, Peter Sutphen, and others.
In 1701, George Willocks (d. 1729) and Dr. John Johnstone (d. 1732) purchased a tract of land called the “Peapack Patent” from the Proprietors of East New Jersey. This parcel encompassed most of what became Bedminster Township and the town of Peapack-Gladstone in Somerset County, New Jersey. Bedminster Township was founded in 1749, and the first settlers were primarily of Scotch, Dutch, and German decent.

This collection consists of a voter register for seven elections held in Bedminster Township, Somerset County, New Jersey from 1797-1803. Entries in this volume include the name of the voter, the names of the candidates for office, and the number of votes cast. Elections ranged in size from 114 to 151 votes and were for the offices of United States Congress, New Jersey State Assembly, Bedminster Township Council, Sheriff, and Coroner. Among the election officials listed in this register are David Nevius (1769-1837), Abraham Nevius (1769-1848), and Daniel Melick (1763-1809).
