John Sydenham (ca. 1688-ca. 1747), possibly a son or grandson of William Sydenham of Fairfield County, Connecticut, settled in Newark, New Jersey where he was a farmer and cordwainer (shoemaker). By 1710, he had married Susannah Handcock (b.1690), the daughter of Sarah (Fowler) Godwin and Edward Handcock, and with her probably had at least four children: John Jr. (1714-1754), Samuel, Jacob, and ( ).
John Sydenham, Jr. was born in Newark, New Jersey on March 16, 1714, where, as an adult, he worked as a yeoman farmer. On December 8, 1741, he married Martha Longworth, daughter of Dorcas and Thomas Longworth, with whom he had seven children: Dorcas (1742-1745), David (1744-1766), William (1746-ca. 1750), John (b. 1748), Susannah (“Sukie”) (1750-1819), William (b. 1751), and Thomas (1753-1816). John Sydenham, Jr. died in Newark, New Jersey on November 1, 1754.

These papers were donated by Laura M. Sydenham of Plainfield, New Jersey in 1947. Miss Plainfield was a member of The New Jersey Historical Society.
The Sydenham Family Papers contain twenty-two documents dating from 1717-1779 and largely consisting of the Newark, New Jersey land deeds of John Sydenham (ca. 1688-ca. 1747) and John Sydenham, Jr. The Papers also contain a power of attorney, an inventory from John Sydenham, Jr.’s estate, and a couple of accounts and receipts.
