The Burns Family Papers contains three volumes of financial records
and spans the years 1856-1907. This collection consists of
one manuscript and two photocopies. The collection includes
household an 1856 account book of Mary Catharine Burns, wife of
Thomas H. Burns (1822-1914); a photocopied ledger, 1856-1860,
that lists the expenses for the Globe Foundry, and expenditures
for items such as milk, muslin, clothing and groceries; and a
photocopied “Cashbook and Memoranda,” 1896-1937, begun
by Thomas H. Burns, Jr. on the day of his marriage to Marie L.
Scheller. This ledger is both a descriptive journal and
account book. These detail expenditures on foodstuffs,
clothing, music lessons, piano tuning, travel, as well as notes
on family matters and historical events. Of particular
interest are the notes kept by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Burns
relative to their hiring of domestic help and those which focus
on the development of their children.
