Biographical Note:
This collection pertains to a branch of the Canfield family which has resided in New Jersey since the seventeenth century. Thomas Canfield (ca.1717-1791), the earliest family member represented in these papers, was a farmer and, in the family tradition, a tanner. He married Elizabeth Baldwin, with whom he had nine children: Loes, Joseph (ca.1750-1829), Nathaniel (1752-1808), Abigail, David, Elizabeth, Phebe, Hannah, and Sarah. Nathaniel Canfield was a private in the state militia during the Revolution. James Canfield (1786-1841), the son of David Canfield resided in Newark, New Jersey and married Elizabeth Bigelow, with whom he had eight children.

This collection was donated to the New Jersey Historical Society by Howard S. Dodd, Jr. in 1985.
Scope and Content Note:
This collection consists of five folders of land deeds and property surveys documenting land ownership in Newark and the surrounding area from 1750 to 1832.
