Scope and Content Notes:

The William Wright and Edward Wright Papers
relate to the Wright family.  The papers pertain to William
Wright (Congressman) and his son Edward who was the Secretary of
the American Legation to St. Petersburg in the 1840’s – 1860’s.
The collection includes correspondence and two scrapbooks of
memorabilia.

Folder one consists of biographical
information on William Wright and his son Edward which is
included in this data file has been taken from the Dictionary of
American Biography and a letter from Dean C. Allard, Director of
Naval Historical Center, Washington, D.C.  This collection
is comprised of three sections.  The first is a group of
various letters primarily written to William Wright while he was
involved in leather manufacturers at Newark, and later as a
Congressman.  Other items of special interest are noted.
The second section consists of a scrapbook (disbound by the
Library’s Paper Conservator) kept by Edward H. Wright.
In this collection are mostly letters written to Edward while he
was in Europe as Secretary of the American Legation to St.
Petersburg, but other items of interest are noted.  The
third section is also a scrapbook, probably kept by Edward,
containing calling cards, letters, and news clippings.

Folders two through seven contain letters,
invitations and other items that were tipped into scrapbook form
have been disbound by the conservator and numbered according to
their original order with pencil.  Letters are from and
family while Edward Wright was Secretary of the United States
Legation to Russia.  Letters are written in both English and
French.  Many letters are from Waldemar de Bodisco, Consul
General of Russia, and apparently a good friend of Edward Wright.
Other names include:

H.K. Harral, Horatio G. Perry, W. Bodisco,
Ivan Arsdale, J.B. Havilland, T.B. Lawrence, G.H. Prince, H.W.
Hubbell, Henry manly, Sidney Webster, Cousin Kate Hubbell, Bessie
Hubbell, Archer Gifford, A.P. Whitehead, Henry S. Taylor, William
P. Jones

announcing his election to position of Director of the Essex
County Bank, a Bearer of Dispatches certificate, invitation to
George Washington’s Inauguration (centennial), invitation to
Buckingham palace, passports, and a telegram from G.B. McClellan.

At the end of the book are Civil War period
letters, about a dozen, including a letter from Mrs. Elizabeth
Tillinghash inquiring about her husbands dead and bloated body.
