Summary:

Documents the landscape, architecture, historic sites, transportation, education, industry, recreation, religion, and other subjects related to specific town, villages, cities and other localities in New Jersey (excepting Newark–Newark photographs filed separately). Photographs consist of 8 x 10 photographs, postcards, prints (engravings and lithographs), matted photographs, carte de visites, cabinet cards, stereocards, oversized and other types of images. Includes towns from every county in New Jersey including Asbury Park, Atlantic City, Camden, Dover, Hoboken, Jersey City, Morristown, New Brunswick, the Oranges, Paterson, Plainfield, Trenton, and other towns. Also includes such entities as the Morris Canal and the Delaware Water Gap.

Includes photographs of hotels, piers, boardwalks, beach scenes, churches, schools, railroads, waterfalls, historic sites, industry, labor, buildings, landscape architecture, gardens, model homes, lakes, street scenes, rural scenes, house interiors, homes of historically important people, parks, lighthouses, institutions and many other subjects related to specific localities.

Arrangement Note:

The New Jersey place photograph files are organized alphabetically according to place or locality name. The photographs are divided into three separate segments consisting of standard size, oversized and double oversized. Each segment is arranged alphabetically. Because of previous filing procedures many of the lithographs or engravings from 19th century magazines and some photographs are filed in the oversize sections by county. Most of the standard sized photographs are filed by town.

Because the images are filed by size there may be several places in the inventory where a town is mentioned. By using key-word searching, it is possible to locate all instances in which a town, building, statue or other place is mentioned with relative ease. The inventory lists many of the subjects or types of images in the series. Although the inventory is quite thorough, photographs added to the collection may not be individually mentioned because this is an open collection.
