MG 1372

HERPERS NEGATIVE COLLECTION. 1860s-1940. 153 items. .75 In. ft.

Organized by negative type and then arranged numerically.

This
collection contains glass plate and film based negatives of Henry F. or Ferdinand J.
Herpers, jewelry setting manufacturers in Newark during the early 20th century.
While many negatives are dated between the 1860s and 1878, these may be contemporary
copies. Images consist mostly of scenes of Newark (1890-1940) including institutions,
governmental buildings, businesses, street scenes, factories, aerial views, people,
advertisements, churches, and several views documenting the evolution of the “Four
Corners” area on the corner of Broad and Market Streets. More specific views include
the Essex County Court House, Military Park, Newark Poor House, Hahne & Co., Newark
Police Station, Herpers Brothers factory, the NJ National Guard leaving and returning from
the Spanish-American War (1898), German Hospital, Newsboys Lodging House, Centre Market,
Miners Empire Burlesque Theater, Broad Street views, Lincoln Park, National State Bank,
snow storm (1920), Weequahic Park, McCabe’s Quarry, and some scenes in West Orange. Some
photographic prints in MG 1361.

Item level inventory available.
