A bound book of handwritten poems entitled, “Scraps from the Time Killer or Cherry Hill Lyrics,” by Jack Mizzen (probably a pseudonym). ” Jack Mizzen,” probably of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, seems to have been a sailor, quite possibly in the American Navy. The verse is largely Victorian parlor verse, and a number of poems are on nautical, naval, and patriotic subjects: “The Dying Sailor,” Lines on the Capture and Burning of Quallah Battoo (Isl. of Sumatra) by the Crew of the U.S. Ship Potomac, Jn. Downes Esqr. Commader, 6th February 1832,” “Lines on the loss of the U.S. Sloop of War Hornet, supposed to have foundered in the Gulf of Mexico in the fall of 1829,” “The Battle of Trenton,” “Lines to the Memory of Lieut. S.B.S. of Princeton N.J.,” “To the Ocean.” There are several musical pieces as well (none with lyrics), two signed “L. M.,” so these may have been the initials of the writer.
