Historical Note
Newark Academy was founded in 1774 and as one of the nation’s oldest independent secondary schools. On November 21, 1780, British troops under Captain Thomas Ward, a Tory, raided the town of Newark and burnt the Newark Academy. In May of 1775, the town voted for one and a half acres of land to be occupied by an academy. The rebuilding of the school took place in 1792 at Broad and Academy Streets. The school was moved twice more within Newark until 1964 when the Academy made its final move from the city of Newark to its sixy-eight acre campus in suburban Livingston.
The Female Department appears to have been started in 1810 for the education of “young ladies” in all of the regular school subjects. The Sabbath school fulfilled the religious part of the girls’ education.

Scope and Content Note
These are reports addressed to the teachers and scholars of the Female Department of the Coloured School in Newark Academy, covering the years 1819, 1821-1822. These reports were prepared by Moses Smith, who was a Newark tanner and currier, a lieutenant in the Essex Brigade of Militia, and a sheriff of Essex County in 1826.
