Historical Note

The author of the journal is unknown. What is known is that he was a member of the baseball team the Brooklyn Bridegrooms, an early moniker used by a team that would later be named the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains a journal dating from March 3, 1890 to March 10, 1890 which describes the Brooklyn Bridegrooms baseball trip through the South. There is a description of the journey from New York to Savannah, Georgia on the Steamer Chattahoochee. The author writes about the weather, the meals served on board, and the personalities of the crewmembers. He also writes about a stowaway found on board who is about to be thrown off the ship when the baseball players decide to pay his $10 fare.

The author also writes about the geography of the South and what impresses him about the region. He writes about the baseball games played in Savannah, Mobile, and New Orleans. He also describes incidents that occur on the road such as the players angering a medicine salesman by being too loud and rowdy. The author also writes about his impressions of New Orleans which was in danger of flooding while the team was there
