Biographical Note

Edgar Partridge Deuell was born on July 9, 1905 in Montreal, Canada. He received a degree in economics from Brown University in 1928 and spent the majority of his life in Hackensack, NJ. He was employed as a statistician at The American Telephone and Telegraph Company for 30 years. He was married to Helen Trenchard and together they had one daughter, Helen. Around 1950, he and some other citizens of Hackensack formed the Good Government League. This political organization, lead by Deuell, sought to clean up the Hackensack political scene, which was being manipulated by the mafia. In 1953, Deuell and the the Good Government League supported a number of political candidates who were elected into office. A year later, Deuell was elected mayor of Hackensack, but his tenure was short lived. In July 1959, citizens became angry at their tax increase and in October of that year, Deuell and his constituents were voted out of office in a recall election. After his failure as mayor, Deuell was appointed commissioner of the Bergen County Sewer Authority. In later years, he ran unsuccessfully for freeholder in the area. He retired in 1968 and moved to Florida. He passed away in 1995, survived by a daughter, Helen Deuell Carter.
