Biographical Note
Stanley Bisguier Winters was a prominent Newark, New Jersey based professor and activist who was known for his scholarship on Newark’s urban, race, and political issues during the 1960s and 1970s.
Born in New York City in 1924, Winters graduated from New York University and earned a doctorate from Rutgers University. He taught history at NJIT beginning in 1957. In addition to his teaching and scholarly work, he became a prominent force as a Newark neighborhood-rights, political, and civil rights activist.
He moved to the Clinton Hill section of Newark in the 1940s. In the 1950s, he co-founded the Clinton Hill Neighborhood Council which fought for neighborhood preservation and improvement, and against the urban renewal policies of the time. He was among the plaintiffs in a 1964 lawsuit against the City of Newark over the declaration of parts of the Clinton Hill neighborhood as a blighted area.
Winters was active in the local civil rights movement, serving as a member of the Executive Board of the Newark NAACP. He wrote a weekly column “Inside Newark” for the Newark edition of the New Jersey Afro-American from 1958 to 1964. He was a good friend and advisor to Newark’s first black mayor, Kenneth Gibson, and was very active in his political campaign. Winters himself also ran for office twice. He ran once for South Ward Councilman in 1962 and again for Essex County Freeholder in 1965.
Winters was also a noted scholar of the Newark riots of 1967. He organized a 1977 conference to mark the 10th anniversary of the riots. This event led to the publication of his book From Riot to Recovery: Newark After Ten Years.
Winters was also a World War II veteran and served in Eastern Europe. This sparked his interest in the history and culture of the area, particularly that of Czechoslovakia. He became a well known Czech scholar, writing a variety of published articles relating to Czechoslovakia.
Winters retired from NJIT in 1991 and retired to Florida. He died on January 28, 2011.
