Kept by a shoemaker in Raritan, Somerset
County, New Jersey.
Gift of William S. Hunt, 1938.
Jacob Fine (fl. 1831-1857) was a shoemaker
in Raritan, Somerset County, New Jersey.
The record books were the gift of William
S. Hunt in 1938. They were a part of a larger donation containing photographs,
books, pamphlets, and a 1756-1759 record book kept by Andrew Leake, also of
Somerset County (MG 118). The volumes were labeled with the accession
numbers M2730-M2733 at the time of their donation.
The records consist of three daybooks and
an account book used by Jacob Fine to track his shoemaking business. The
daybooks date from 1831-1834, 1835-1839, and 1843-1857 and record the daily
business of making, mending, and soling shoes and boots. The entries are
by date and note customer name, job, and price. Fines account book
dates from 1833-1852 and tracks individual customers accounts. These
entries are by person and record date and money owed. The accounts are not
indexed. There are also miscellaneous receipts, promissory notes, and
accounts inserted between the pages of the four volumes.

records.
