Chiefly remembered for his works on field sports, Herbert was
born in England. In 1831 he came to the United States and settled
in New York City. In 1845 he built a cottage in a wooded retreat
on the Passaic River near Newark, where he did much of his
writing. Herbert’s letter to Joseph P. Bradley, written on
December 1,1852, was published in the NJHS <1Proceedings,>1 n.s.,
12 (1927): 114-15.
