Financial accounts of a cooper and teamster in Jefferson Village (now Maplewood).

Biographical Note:

Nathaniel Brown (fl. 1803-1834) was a cooper, teamster, and laborer in Jefferson Village (now called Maplewood), Essex County, New Jersey.

Provenance Note:

This collection was the gift of Mrs. Daniel H. Reheis in 1971.

Scope and Content Note:

Nathaniel Brown used this volume as a combination account book and daybook from 1803-1834.  Early entries suggest that Brown performed many activities such as masonry, excavation, cutting and hauling wood, fence building, and harvesting, but later entries primarily detail barrel making.  Typical entries include the name of the employer, the type of work performed or the number of barrels made, the date, and the price. Among Brown’s customers were Abraham Shipman, Dr. John Williams, Enos Tompkins, and Arnold Gillam.  Brown also recorded the amount of goods he purchased from a general store owned by Lewis Pierson, such as molasses, nails, and butter.
