Summary:

The book contains outlines of sermons preached by McDowell between September 1 and November 24, 1816 at the First Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth. Born in Bedminster, John McDowell was the son of Matthew and Elizabeth Anderson McDowell. After graduating from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1801, he studied theology, first, under Rev. H. W. Hunt of Newton, and later under John Woodhull of Freehold. Installed as pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth in 1804, John McDowell occupied this post until 1845, when he became pastor of the Spring Garden Church in Camden County.  In addition to his regular pastoral duties, McDowell published a number of religious works.
