Summary

Summary:

Letters and documents relating to Noah Baldwin, Moses Kent, and other members of this family from Caldwell in Essex County. Included are some township tax records and letters from the New York office of the Caldwell Railroad Company.

Biographical Note:

The Baldwins in this collection are descendents of John Baldwin, who immigrated to the new world from England in the late 1630s, and his wife Mary.

Noah Baldwin, the great-great-great-great grandson of John and Mary Baldwin, was a farmer who resided in Caldwell, New Jersey.  In the fall of 1808, he married Naomi Baldwin of Cranetown (now Montclair), New Jersey, also a distant descendent of John and Mary Baldwin. Naomi and Noah Baldwin had nine children together: Joseph E., Caleb H., Sarah E., Noah Oscar, Marcus, Esther C., Hannah M., Ann Louisa, and Zenas A.  Noah Baldwin died in Caldwell on March 13, 1832.

Noah Oscar Baldwin was born on June 11, 1815 at the family homestead in Caldwell. He lived on the farm throughout his lifetime and eventually took it over from his father. He was a member of the Caldwell Town Committee, was appointed overseer of the poor, and was a member of the Caldwell Presbyterian Church.  He also seems to have been active in the Caldwell Railway Company near the turn of the century.

Noah O. Baldwin married Emily Gould of Paterson, New Jersey in 1855. They had one son together, Edward H. Baldwin.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection contains mostly the legal and business papers, dating from 1807-1891, of the Baldwin family and other residents of the town of Caldwell, Essex County, New Jersey.  There are also records from local government offices that were held by the Baldwins, such as tax collector, overseer of the poor, or justice of the peace. These records date from 1825-1849. The collection, therefore, has been divided into Baldwin Family Papers and Essex County, New Jersey Records, and then grouped by type: legal documents, business records, correspondence, and miscellaneous.

The papers were generated mostly by Noah Baldwin and his son Noah O. Baldwin, but also involve a number of business partners, colleagues, and/or family members including Caleb D. Burnet (fl.1821), Cyrus Crane (1779-1827), Nathaniel S. Crane (1789-1870), and Thomas D. Gould (fl.1838-1842). These documents include deeds, mortgages, and foreclosures on Caldwell lands; summons, bonds, and wills; receipts, bills, accounts, and records of daily transactions; several letters regarding the Caldwell Railway Company; and unidentified lists or calculations

The Essex County local government records include documents regarding homeless widows under the supervision of the overseer of the poor, tax documents, and surveys of the acreage, buildings, holdings, and population of the separate towns of Essex County.
