This collection contains material from and about soldier named Henry Van Nest. He served in the New Jersey 9th Infantry until 1864 and was transferred into the Veteran Reserve Corps that same year. He was discharged from the Veteran Reserve Corps in 1864. During his time with the New Jersey Infantry, he received the promotion to private. He seems to have had a good relationship with his brother Abram Van Nest who lived in Flaggtown, Somerset County, NJ, as eveidenced by their frequest correspondence.
This collection contains 3 letters and corresponding envelopes addressed to Abram Van Nest from Henry Van Nest. The letters describe Abram’s service in the New Jersey 9th Infantry during the Civil War. Two of the letters are written on patriotic stationary with pro-Union symbolism.
