Summary:

Principally indentures of or pertaining to Caleb Wheeler (ca. 1717-1793) and his son, also Caleb Wheeler (ca. 1751-1824), landowners from Newark, New Jersey.

Gift of William S. Disbrow, 1918.

Biographical Note:

The Wheeler family represented in these documents is descended from James Wheeler and his family from Hartford, Connecticut.  James Wheeler married Mary Coe, the widow of Benjamin Coe, and produced one son, Caleb (ca. 1717-1793).  James Wheeler died in Newark, New Jersey on January 3, 1747.

Caleb Wheeler was born in Connecticut, but moved to Newark, New Jersey prior to the Revolutionary War.  He married Phebe ( ) and together they had six children: James (ca. 1740-1777), Anne (ca. 1742-1794), Phebe, Mary, Caleb (ca. 1751-1824), and Abigail.  Caleb Wheeler died in Newark on December 23, 1793.

Phebe Wheeler married Robert Neil and outlived him.  Mary Wheeler married John Burnet; Anne Wheeler married Caleb Bruen (1735-1818); Abigail Wheeler married Oliver Burnet.  Caleb Wheeler married Betsey ( ) (ca. 1757-1833) and lived in Newark, New Jersey.  He died on May 28, 1824.

James Wheeler (ca. 1740-1777) married Rhoda Lyon and raised five children: Stephen, James, Joseph Lyon, Phebe (d. 1804), and Sarah.  Phebe Wheeler married Governor William S. Pennington (1757-1826).

These documents were donated to the Society by Doctor William S. Disbrow in February 1918 (accession numbers run from M1157-M1218).

Scope and Content Note:

The Wheeler Family Papers contain thirty-six items documenting three generations of Wheelers and dating from 1714-1892.  The documents have been arranged chronologically into two folders.  The majority of the collection consists of indentures for land in Essex County, New Jersey, particularly Newark.  There are also two manuscript maps, a survey, and Caleb Wheeler’s (ca. 1717-1793) last will and testament and probate certificate.
