Summary:

Account book, 1787-1812, of Samuel Congar, a weaver from Newark; correspondence and receipt book , 1831-1854, of Dr. Stephen Congar (b. 1810), a Newark physician, New Jersey State Legislator, 1852-1854, the first president of the Newark Board of Education, and superintendent of Newark public schools.  Papers of Samuel Hayes Congar (1796-1872), a local historian and librarian of the New Jersey Historical Society, 1852-1872, including correspondence, genealogical data, notes on Newark, abstracts from public records,  a volume of “Monumental Inscriptions of Newark’s Earliest Settlers;” minutes of the Committee on Newark Charter Revision, 1855; Newark voting registers for 1832 and 1839, listing the names of eligible voters alphabetically with comments on their political preferences.  Includes letters of Solomon Alofsen, John R. Burnet, Horace N. Congar, William A. Whitehead, and Justin Winsor.  Family names mentioned in the genealogical notes include: Baldwin, Ball, Beach, Bruen, Burnet, Congar, Crane, Cumming, Dalglish, Dodd, Harrison, Morris,  Peck, Parkhurst, Plume, Schenk, and Ward.
